Eindhoven is the proud home of one of the finest concert halls in Europe: Muziekgebouw Frits Philips Eindhoven, named after the grandson of the founder of Philips Electronics Nederland. Today, Muziekgebouw Eindhoven is justifiably regarded as one of the premier European concert halls, attracting the leading musicians of our time. The ambience and excellent acoustics have made Muziekgebouw Eindhoven an absolute favourite for audiences and performers alike. Located in Eindhoven city centre, it offers all the benefits of a modern, state-of-the-art concert hall. The two auditoriums in the Muziekcentrum were constructed according to scientifically derived acoustic engineering techniques provided by the Eindhoven University of Technology. The concert hall itself has thus become one of the best instruments for the musicians performing on its stages, a perfect host for the competition. www.muziekgebouweindhoven.nl

An important part of every competition is a commissioned composition by an important composer. Composers in recent years were: Louis Andriessen (‘Woodpecker’ for percussion, 2000), Kevin Volans (‘Trumpet & String Quartet 2’, 2002), Jacob ter Veldhuis (‘Barracuda Concerto’ for percussion and symphony orchestra, 2006), Steve Martland (‘Starry Night’ for string quartet & percussion, 2008) and Michael Torke (‘Mojave’ for marimba and orchestra & marimba and string quartet, 2010). Following in their footsteps is American composer Nico Muhly, who has been commissioned to write the obligatory double-concerto to be performed during the finals by the participants together with renowned percussionist Colin Currie and chamber-orchestra Britten Sinfonia conducted by André de Ridder.
A second commission has been given to budding Dutch composer Joey Roukens. He will write the compulsory work for timpani to be performed during the finals.
Born in 1981, American composer Nico Muhly is already the most demanded composer all over the globe. His orchestral works have been premiered by the Boston Pops the New York Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony. Muhly's opera, Two Boys premiered in June 2011 at the English National Opera and will make its Metropolitan Opera debut during the 2013/2014 season. Film credits include Muhly’s scores for Joshua (2007), and Best Picture nominee The Reader (2008). He has also lent his skills as performer, arranger and conductor to other musicians, including Philips Glass, Antony and the Johnsons, Björk, Rufus Wainwright, Grizzly Bear and Sufjan Stevens.
Rising star Joey Roukens (1982) can be defined as the front runner of the next generation of Dutch composers. In recent years he received commissions by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Asko/Schoenberg ensemble, the Storioni Festival and violinist Janine Jansen, a.o.. His percussion concerto premiered in May 2011 by Colin Currie, who declared it one of the five best concerto’s ever written.
